Since its widespread adoption into society, the cellphone has made life a whole lot easier in so many ways. One of the less pleasurable ways, depending which side you are on, has been the break-up text.
Emotionally vacuous, cowardly creatures that we are, its no surprise that the majority of break-up texts are sent by men. An online poll reported that out of 7,500 men and 8,300 women surveyed, 88 percent of men had broken up with someone over text message, compared to only 18 percent of women.
However, the shoe is on the other foot and comes with a high heel, when it comes to breaking up via social media, surely more cruel even than the dreaded text. 32 percent of women reported using Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms to break off a relationship, compare to just 8 percent of men. The women in our office say that stat may just be a reflection on male technology aptitude.
If you have been on the receiving end of any of the above, you may seek solace in the fact that even the rich and famous are not immune to such indignities. A slew of celebrities have been the victim of this emotional crime; you may remember a YouTube clip in 2006 that showed the moment Kevin Federline received his break-up text from then-wife Brittany Spears. Katy Perry, Jennifer Aniston, Charlie Sheen and Jessica Simpson are just some of the megastars who have been brought down to earth this way just like us ordinary folks.
